Abbreviated For The Masses

This afternoon I spent some more time introducing tweaks to df.com. Our latest improvements are as follows:

  • Cleaned up the 404 Page Not Found quick search function. Better layout and coloring is now found on the 404 Search page making it easier to use than ever.
  • Updated CAPTCHA form to continue to reduce spam comments (haven’t had one sneak through yet proudly enough).
  • Cleaned up the Google.com Custom Search found at the bottom of our in house Search page making that also more user friendly and easier to read.
  • Introduced new “teaser” function to front page News posts. If the post goes over 500 words it will be abbreviated on the main “Home” page. This insures df.com load times stay under 15 seconds and helps make the site snappy when first loading. You’ll also notice a new “Permanent Link” is shown at the bottom of each post to help you with linking to the article on your blog/web page if you so wish to do so. Finally, you’ll notice each post also has the complete word count and estimated time to read it so if you’re on the go or in a hurry you know how much time you’ll need to tackle the text at a later time. All in all I think this will improve web site browsing speeds and also let you know just how long an article is.

These are some of the small, but important improvements I’ve recently implemented. Hopefully they will help you continue to enjoy our site even more. As always, feedback is welcome.

Rating System Error

Just a heads up with the post and page rating system (the one that does the 1-10 stars and thumbs up/down on each post and pages), it appears after upgrading to the latest release there is a bug. It specifically effects web viewers using Firefox 3.5.x. Microsoft Internet Explorer 8.x is not effected by this bug.

The issue is when you vote, the “please wait”  graphic hangs and never passes through showing your vote as cast. If you wait three or four seconds and reload the web page you’ll see your vote was indeed cast, but not reflected on the site. This method of vote and refresh can work as a temporary work for the time being. We’re tracking the issue on our DF.com Code Info page. The issue has been reported to the software maker and should be addressed in the coming days. Once it is an update will be released when the new code is installed.

I appreciate your patience with this issue.

Picture Perfect

I’ve added a Photos section to the site that includes some candid shots, past events, and good old fashion family photos. It was rather interesting digging through these and it brought back a lot memories. It reminds me of my first post on this new version of the site a few weeks back, where I talked about the long strange journey I’ve had. Here we are, new site and a new year. No matter how much the deal is the same– Pirate Radio and shenanigans; there is still many other things different. That’s life I guess. I hope you enjoy looking through these pictures as much as I did. Expect new Pirate Radio this Sunday night to posted (10/12/08). Post production is done and it’s all ready to go. It’s time to do what we do best– the Pirate Radio begins anew!

Classic DF – 12/2/99

Dec. 2, 1999: Noteworthy News: WTO has turned into some kind of sixties style rally. Clinton has used the convention to attempt to stop child labor. Liberals are pissed. Ummm… I think the main problem is their wasn’t enough good programming this season on television to occupy time better wasted. A Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial has been proposed, which may be the only way black man in Washington next in line to a president, LOL. If DF.com has got you all ready to post your music to the net as the next big thing and a way into instant stardom, you may want to read this first 🙂 New Zealand has elected a new government… did I mention that one of the members of Parliament is transgendered… boy does that hit home. Yesterday was World AIDS Day (their is nothing funny about that). Want to feel stupid… click here. Guess what, another rap artist is in trouble... I believe it was Tupac Shukar who said, “You can’t put money in someone’s hands and expect them to act like they aren’t from a ghetto when the gutter is all they ever knew.” Brittney Spears is now legal for those pedophiles out there who are interested… I guess it’s back to obsessing about the Olsen twins for you guys. Another lovely rant essay at Suck.com. Not So Noteworthy DF News: God, say you’ll revamp and they e-mail. Okay, I get the picture, sheesh! Check out the mystery post for Dec. 1st on Marlin’s Place. I believe it is a response to my Nov. 30th post. If what you are implying Sam is that I pointed fingers… I haven’t said who it is yet. And if your wondering if I’m going to seek police action at this point with no proof of guilt (to the best of your knowledge)… all I want to know is who is guilty? What are you trying to say? Are you admitting unlawful carnal knowledge (knowing it before it be known to the public in other words)? Or are you trying to be some sort of ass kissing escape goat hero with an alibi to someone? Who? What are you talking about? Um, to put it bluntly who are you trying to save? I know what you’re saying… that’ s not what that post meant… maybe what you’re really saying is that I’m trying to be vague and mysterious. That your some kind of dark avenger of evil that can vile and degrade you without proof. That’s mature? I quote now: Note to certain individuals, immature actions beget immature actions, however, alibi’s suck, so point your fingers elsewhere. Amazing how the most mature show their true colors so easily. What immature actions? What did I do to who? Are you saying that a certain event sparked this? Are you saying that Dorothy Sharpe is to blame? Are you admitting guilt? Your web page has been saved and noted… Here is the lesson: Knowledge is power definitively, but maturity is knowing how to use that power best.
