DigitalFl00d – “Drowns” (EP)

DigitalFl00d: Drowns

It started back in 1995. I got a Packard-Bell Pentium 75 MHz PC with a Sound4 16 bit soundcard and 16 MB of RAM. That is when I first started to play with Syntrillium’s Cool Edit 95. It had just come out and the program was a God sent dream. For the first time ever I could “rip” CD tracks digitally to my hard drive and then remix them in Cool Edit. Finally, I could compress them to .MP2 or later that year .MP3 to distribute over BBS’s. We are talking the early days of digital music here… there was no bitching from the RIAA. Just a bunch of young adults making new noise with some digital toys. That was were we all started. In our basements putting together other people’s work into our own mixes. That inspiration has lead me and countless others to create music of our own. Today’s technology would have not been where it is today if we didn’t push it to the limits back in 1995. The following songs were created between 1996 and 1999. They represent my growth as a musician. Some are rough, unmastered, and poorly done. Others are a predecessor to the style that would become DigitalFl00d. All are an excellent retrospective of my inspiration, my progression, and my intentions. I hope they inspire you to find your own outlet of creation just as the original artists put the spark of creativity in me when I first heard them. —Chris “flAnnelmAn” Welch

All remixes by DigitalFl00d. DigitalFl00d is Chris Welch, a computer, some software, a guitar, some samples, an effects pedal, and an occasional burst of inspiration. All songs were originally written by the artists as denoted in the tracks section.

Additional Notes: Thanks goes out to my wonderful wife Melissa and my nutty, but nice family (flAnnelmom, Tom, Mary, The In-laws, Brittany the Wonderpup, Peanut the Psycho Bird, and Catbert: Evil HR Director). Mad props out to all my DF2K Crew: Daemon Immortalis, Mervernation, Rock (and his mighty Jeph.net), Red Raven, Flying Moose, Joe_Ban, Kevin Andre, and everyone else listed on the Links Page. If I forgot anyone I’m sorry it just goes that way sometimes, but you know if you count or not. If it’s not… you can bite me. A special thank you to all the artists that have inspired me and others to create our own works. You have planted the seeds for the future. Big thanks to God for having the balls to put me on the face of the Earth knowing how much I would plan on messing it up 🙂

About This Album

Spanning production work done between 1996 and 1999, “Drowns” is a short format (EP or elongated play) album that really is a compilation of remix singles released on CDs prior to the wide availability of the Internet. Released shortly after the “Still Born” single in late 2000, “Drowns” was a way for Chris Welch to catch up fans with his earliest work. Chris began his music production career remixing tracks on his computer. These songs were those first early remixes. Notably low fi in production due to the limitations of the equipment available at the time, “Drowns” is interesting nevertheless if only because of how well the tracks sound on a $0 production budget. The last track is missing. To date, Chris has not released this track as it has yet to successfully be transferred from tape to digital format.

Cliff Notes

* Earliest track is the missing “All American Hate Anthem 1998”, which was originally recorded from PC to analog cassette tape due to disk space limitations of the time. The track was produced in 1997 on a Packard Bell.

* First released locally on hand out promo audio CDs. Tracks were later released in MP3 format on private BBS.

* “Gift of Pain (Gift From Heaven remix)” is in the very early MP2 format. This track is the oldest digitally recorded track and was produced in early 1998. MP3 as a format wasn’t invented until in 1999.

* “Perfectly Drugged” was an experimental attempt to break speaker cones and has been known to damage audio systems when turned up too loud. Most speaker cones will actually make a popping sound even under moderate volume levels.

* Releasing tracks from this album on My Space caused their system admins to delete the Digitalflood account for “copyright violation” in 2005.

* The original name chosen by Chris Welch for Digitalflood was “Gabriel Machine”. Initial releases of tracks were under this group name. Later in 1997 the name was changed to “DigitalFl00d”.

* “flAnnelmAn” was Chris Welch’s first web and DJ monikers. It predates the Digitalflood work; dating back into early tape only DJ sessions and variety show recordings made in the mid to early 1990s.

* The earliest digital formatted tracks by Chris Welch appeared on the IPS BBS, which was a local bulletin board private dial in service circa 1997. The original forum was called “Beaver Dam”.

* Melissa was Chris Welch’s first wife. Their marriage ended in 2003.
