The Free Software Round Up

We’ve talked about free office applications, free web based applications, and to round up our tour of free software I’d like to broaden the scope a bit. The following are some recommendations from other sites I trust when looking for applications to get the job done. From technical support, utilities, productivity software to beyond– there is no shortage of variety here. You’re sure to find a program that you would have otherwise paid for to help constrain costs and get the job done right the first time. Best of all– it’s all free.

  • MaximumPC 32 Essential Apps – Thirty two of the best applications out there are brought to you by my favorite computer magazine. Check out “DropBox” on the list. I know several professionals who rely on it today to sync files on the cheap across multiple computers.
  • ZDNet Reader’s Choice – Twenty five of the best lightweight free applications. Check out “7-Zip” if you’re looking for across the board support of compressed file formats (including Linux tar).
  • Open Source Web Design – Need a web layout, but don’t want to plunk down big bucks for the design? Check out OSWD for some basic lay outs that can be spruced up to meet your needs.
  • Aviary – Online graphic and layout design software that can be accessed using a standard web browser. Pull off neat effects and some top end layout tricks without spending hours reading about how to pull it off in Photoshop. Aviary is truly revolutionary and will change the way you make graphics.

As you can see from the last few blogs, there is a ton of free quality software out there to be had on the Net. I welcome your feedback. If there is an application that I missed that you feel deserves kudos please drop me a comment.

I hope you enjoyed our round up of free software and that I’ve got the creative juices flowing. Maybe you’ve even found an application or two that will help you constrain costs; which increasing productivity. Tune in for future blogs where we continue to keep you up to date on the latest free top rate software.

The Long Road Back

We’re out of Alpha on the web site and into public Beta, which is a good thing. Mostly because now the majority of you can see the site. The longest delay point in the project has been working on some blogging features that are taking way too long in development. I’m shifting forward though on the main site and focusing on restoring the previous areas. If you see something broken feel free to drop me a line and I’ll tackle it from there, but at this point about 60% of the site is running the way it should be. The next major phase is rebuilding the Albums section and shortly there after restoring Pirate Radio to its webcasting availability. Expect an update when we hit that milestone.

September 23, 2003: [•] New old web pages. It’s like new old cheese. Only cheesier. And now equipped with Riboflavin! JOY! Check out Verona’s new old web page because she’s like my best friend and I basically live at her hour five out the seven days of the week. Mostly because no one else would put up with my crap that much on a daily basis. [•] While on the subject of new old web pages, good old Sepiroth (pronounced Q-AHAHDHDHSHHDH-d**RLK) updated his site and moved it on over to the greener grass of ye old Jeph.net. Check him out. Not in that way! God! Perv! [•] If you haven’t been keeping up with Stack Ups! then you suck. I mean really, you do. So start making it a habit to check it everyday. Like checking your blood sugar. That old guy in the commercials tells me to check my “blood sugar as often as the doctor says”. My doctor says never. So I don’t. Wow, I’m a wealth of info this week. [•] It’s my favorite time of year! NO NOT FALL! I’m talking about Octoberfest beer release time (duh). I’m a German Lager lover (not to be confused with an alcoholic who simply is a lover of being Lagered). Saranac has released their limited edition Saranac Octoberfest Traditional Lager. It’s good. So if you’re over 21 pick up a pack. It’s good beer that is German and Lager. And remember don’t drink and drive especially in the wrong direction on a one way street. And with that word of wisdom I call it a night. You’re a night! –

June 16, 2003: [•] So I finally figured out when I’m going to update this darn thing of mine I dare call a world wide web site of page. You’ll notice I plan on doing it all week during the evening (look at the Calendar page for more info)… er… updating my web page that is… not ummmm…. moving right along! My job is still going well. I’m doing development work on software and its really odd to just be doing things on my own. Like actually being able to be creative. The one downer is my department budget is limiting my resources for a small time. This isn’t much of problem as I have switched from Photoshop (a minimal $100 budget expense) to GIMP (completely free off the Net), but the problem is the Windows 9x/XP port is really unstable. Crashes are frequent and that can negate 10 or 15 minutes worth of work. Even saving is dangerous as that too could induce a crash. Not fun. I’m hopefully going to find a more stable freeware application, but in the meantime this will do. I put in for more some other resources (Photoshop, Dreamweaver, etc…), but we’ll see what can be invested on my projects. Actually I kind of like having to make due. I haven’t had to be this resourceful for years. I truly have to rely on my artistic talent instead of just using a filter or some lame ass trick like that. I kind of like the idea that I have to strive for this. In fact, I LOVE the idea I have to actually be creative. I really think I’ve found my calling and I’m attacking the tasks at hand with all the vigor of my resources. This could either be my chance to shine or a really big failure. Either way I will learn from the process, adapt, correct, and move on. This rules!

[•] Protesters want to move a W.W.II monument from in between the Washington and Lincoln Monuments since they believe no man made object should stand between. Bunch of whiners. [•] Unhappy? Divorced? [•] Jason and Mark Vogt have been accused of more sexual abuse charges. [•] Muggings, burgalries, and golf clubs… oh my. [•] A scooter company has won $500,000 from the Spice Girls. [•] Brace yourself: 3rd Base is back (oh my God). [•] Pearl Jam has been blamed for the Rockslide Festival deaths. Sure, it’s always the bands fault not the actual people pushing and acting like assholes. [•] SeemsLikeSalvation News is reporting Marilyn Manson’s Holy Wood release as October via confirmation by John 5 and that the new A Perfect Circle single will be Hollow (it will include a live cut of Hollow and the remix of Judith by Danny Lohner). [•] Did Apple pull the new ATI Radeon card from the new G4 cube because they leaked information before Macworld? Looks like it. [•] It looks like I’ll be moving soon to my mother-in-law’s. Honestly, I’m not to happy about that. I haven’t been getting along with her for a while. It’s not that she is a bad person, but I just don’t agree with 99.9% of what she believes and 50% of what she does. I just don’t like that part of her. I really think she hurts Azazel more then she helps her, but she doesn’t want to believe that because that’s her mom. So I have to respect my wife’s wishes. Honestly, I’m not too happy about any of this, but our future child needs a place to live and my mom just doesn’t have the room, but my mother-in-law does. Ultimately what would make me happy is a place of our own, but that is off a bit (1 or 2 years). Everyone tells me I should bite the bullet and do what’s best for my child. But I ask you is the best exposing our child to what I worst abhor in a person? I don’t know… I just don’t know anymore.
