About The Applefest Thing

Applefest 2009Every year my hometown of Warwick, NY holds Applefest on the first Sunday of October and this year was its twenty first anniversary. Applefest is a traditional community fair and festival to celebrate the fall harvest. Warwick’s main harvest crop is apples. Hence the name Applefest. This year rolled in the biggest crowd I can remember in five years. I have to admit, I thought that Applefest had jumped the shark and was doomed to be forgotten, but for whatever reason the crowd turn out was at least 30,000 people. One economist theory is that a bad economy makes for people doing less foreign/long distance vacation travel meaning they do more local spending in a 30 mile radius  and it certainly seems feasible given what I saw at Applefest a week ago. This meant for one day the Town of Warwick, NY’s population (~35k people) was doubled and shoved into the tiny Village of Warwick. The Village is at the town’s center and where most of the festival takes place. Cars were lined up down Route 94 into New Jersey and over the mountain down Route 17 to NYC. Admittedly traffic going into Northern and Western Orange County was light so clearly the metro crowd was in full effect.

The unfortunate downside is the festival at that level of attendance in such a small village results in it being very hard to enjoy with two young children. It’s hard to move around with a stroller and my eight year old daughter doesn’t have the patience to wait in line twenty minutes for a ride or forty minutes for a bag of popcorn. So our trip through the festival was very brief in the form of two vital favorite family stops.

First we got gyros down on Church Street. Every year this great gyro stand setups and make the best lamb gyros ever. They are simply amazing. The price is forty dollars though (not exactly priceless). Pretty steep for three gyros. Then we went over to Stanley Deming Park on the other side of the Village so my older daughter could ride the carnival rides. Twenty five dollars later, three hours, and some six rides (yes I said only six rides in three hours– absolutely packed) everybody was cranky, hot, and tired. So we called it quits.

I like Applefest, don’t get me wrong. I think it’s a great way to support local community organizations, raise funds for volunteer emergency services and non-profits, draw crowds to the local agri-entertainment venues (orchards, farms, etc…), and expose people to the cheeky preppy Village shops that is Warwick (a God to honest amazing feat in a world filled with horrid big boxes and corporate owned chains). It is hard though to really enjoy it like in the lower volume years of the last part of the decade. I guess if sacrificing one day in Warwick for the masses to support the community is the sacrifice I have to make– then so be it, but I won’t lie that I miss being able to get through the carnival and get gyros in two hours.

Test Drives

2010 Ford Taurs SHOIt’s been a rather interesting weekend. Went out with a few friends last night to GW’s in Chester, NY and got to drink a few nice cold pints of Guinness. It’s been 250 years since Sir Arthur Guinness founded the brewery in St. James Gate; which is in the city of Dublin in Ireland and brewed his first stout that would eventually evolve into the drink we consume today. To mark the anniversary of this momentous occasion we drank a few pints, told a few stories, and debated about music. Due to health reasons, I have restrict my alcohol drinking amount and that added a bit of extra air to the event. I feel that you always enjoy a good beer more when you consume it in moderation. This being a good example of why I feel that way. We ended the night appropriately enough with the infamous Chickenette sandwich at the Monroe Diner in Monroe, NY. A good time was had by all needless to say.

Skow and I managed to skip over to Washingtonville, NY and catch the Casket Architects as well during the course of the night. They were playing as the opening act for another band’s record release party. As usual, they were absolutely amazing live. We made sure to pick up their new album “Future Wounds”.

Today the local Ford dealer, Leo Kaytes, participated in the Ford Education Donation program call “Drive 4UR School” where you get a chance to test drive a Ford vehicle. Every test drive netted a $20 donation to the local school system in Warwick, NY from Ford and helps support the sports program. It’s a worthy cause (have to support the youth and help keep those kids fit) and how you can you go wrong with getting a chance to drive a Ford of your choice? I choose the brand new 2010 Ford Taurus SHO. Over 350bhp flows from a 3.5 liter direct injection dual turbo v6 engine to 19″ tires driven with AWD. The power delivery is smooth (I easily nailed 50 mph in about 4 seconds) though a six speed automatic. The roar of the engine is meaty and reminded me of my 2006 v6 Mustang on steroids in engine note. I was overall very impressed. So five minutes of incredible driving fun in a car that isn’t even available for sale yet, $20 to the school, and a win-win for everybody.

I also stopped by to watch my oldest daughter’s soccer game this afternoon along with my wife and youngest daughter, as well as, M’Weezy. She got to play goalie for the first time and made two nice saves. Her team lost 3-0, but overall they did pretty good (they won last week 2-0). The other team was a bit older and more seasoned. This is my daughter’s first year playing soccer and only her second game so she’s still a bit green, but she is learning fast. I noticed her defense skills were getting better and she actually played the whole game end to end without any rest (God knows I wouldn’t last 60 minutes). We’re all really proud of her in my family and I think it’s great she’s trying something new. She seems to really enjoy the game and is having a good time (which is the most important thing of all).

My youngest daughter has randomly (and seemingly out of nowhere) started saying the phrase “I’m nuts”. She must have picked it up on Noggin (she really watches nothing else). Nevertheless it was slightly funny to randomly hear her blurt it out without warning.

My wife, youngest daughter, and myself joined Skow, DJ SlipK, Aeryn Heather, and another friend at Cheryl’s Fried Fish and Soul Food in Middletown, NY. This was my first time up there, but Skow and SlipK have been raving about it for months. We were not disappointed. I had smothered pork chops, beans & rice, and potato salad. My wife had fried pork chops, mac & cheese, and beans & rice. My youngest daughter had the mac & cheese. The side orders filled a whole plate. Our pork chops were both huge. The food overall was amazing. The mac & cheese is the best I’ve had since my Mom’s homemade take on it. Outstanding. Definitely recommend it if you’re ever in the area.

M’Weezy stopped in today. We briefly talked about Pirate Radio. We’ll be lining up recording soon and starting to hash out a guest list. What’s holding us up is my orthopedist visit tomorrow. I want to know roughly how my schedule is going to look for surgery before I line a bunch of things up. Once I understand that time line I can start working on staging production around my downtime.

And that was my mundane, but very satisfying weekend in a nut shell.

Shameless Promotion: New Casket Architects CD

Casket Architects "Future Wounds" CDThis past weekend the Casket Architects released their new CD “Future Wounds” to much accolades during their CD release party at the Tuscan Cafe in Warwick, NY. I’m not one to pimp out the “scene” any longer (cause frankly the scene died about ten years ago a fiery painful and much under documented death), but it is noteworthy for a few reasons:

1. They are arguably one of the best live bands from Orange County, NY actively performing (if not THE best).

2. They are a sonic mind trip and a half– listening to their first two albums (“Dance on the Death Nerve” and “Skull Persuasion”) was like some sick late night mash up of Skinny Puppy and Napalm Death… this album takes it another step further.

3. There are few truly creative bands out there. Casket Architects manages to really cross musical boundaries, do something original, and be pretty darn melodic without being a Pop sell out in any sense. We call that “win-win-win”.

I’m not close with the band (so there’s no incentive for me to give props) though Skow admittedly knows them, but he didn’t ask me to pimp them either. I just feel they deserve the shout out and if you like digitalflood’s stuff it’s certainly worth checking out their new CD (which can conveniently be purchased through their new Merch shop).

Give it a listen and drop back to let me know what you think. You can (even maybe more conveniently) find the Casket Architects featured in the digitalflood Pirate Radio “Palindrome Remix” episode if you want a sneak peak at their earlier work. You can also listen to Skow and I babble about nonsensical metal ramblings, as well as, food during that same episode in case you’re into that sort of thing.

Classic DF – 6/13/03

June 13, 2003: [•] Ah, long time no banter. Let’s catch up: Last week I was on vacation and it was awesome. I spent the whole week with Gette just chilling out having a great time together around the house. We wandered around, bonded, and at some point ended up at Chuck E Cheese’s dancing on-stage with a six foot tall mechanical rat. We rule! Aside from causing a scene at the local kid’s hang out I’ve also been enjoying my new car. It’s nice. Sure it’s no sexus in the Lexus, but I’ll leave big pimping to Jay Z as he far surpasses my capabilities at it. [•] After such an incredible vacation that totally zenned my rear you’d think going back to work would stink. AH HAH! You’d be wrong! I started on my new role as “Network Specialist”. The words “kick ass” come to mind. Though sometimes I think of the movie Office Space while I’m there and I don’t mean that in a bad way. It’s just that everyone over in this department takes quotes out of it and randomly drops it into conversations. I think they’re just trying to see if I’m paying attention. I plan on name dropping right back– My maroon Swingline stapler should be here any day now 😉 [•] So now it’s back to the weekend again and I figured I’d update while Gette naps. I REALLY want to go to the zoo tomorrow with her if it’s nice out, but we’ll see. On a sad note, my sister lost her cat Murray. He ran away on Thursday. If you see an orange and white domestic short hair cat wandering around Warwick please let me know. I couldn’t find a picture of him around the house, but the cat in the link looks a lot like him only Murray is chubbier. Expect an update in a week or two… or three… yeah exactly WHATEVER!

Classic DF – 6/3/03

June 03, 2003: [•] Today is my birthday. I’m 26 years old. Feel free to send lots of money via the address supplied in the big flAnnelmAn ad above if you wish to send a gift. Thank you. [•] Moving right along, Birthday present number one: The Village of Warwick announced at last night’s Board meeting it will be ceasing all condemnation proceedings ASAP and supporting free market principles. I’m happy, enough said. [•] Birthday present number two: The scratch on my rear bumper. I didn’t put it there, but whoever did… well thank you very much. I’ll remember you around Christmas time. You’re right up there with the moron who passed me last night, realized my brights are REALLY bright, pulled over to let me pass, and then was forced to follow me the rest of the way at 40 MPH in a 55 MPH zone. [•] Birthday present number three: BrokenReality has released screen captures from his up and coming animated project. Be warned– you may want to keep a towel around to clean up all the drool these suckers are going make you create. [•] Birthday present number four: Thanks to all my friends and family who wished me a happy birthday. It wasn’t whether you actually bought me something or not; it’s the fact that you remembered to begin with. 😉 [•] Birthday present number five: Having my daughter home on my birthday and spending the entire day playing with her. Gette and I have fun no matter what we’re doing. Today was no exception. You go girl because you’re Daddy’s best gift ever. 😉 [•] Birthday present number six: The tattoo. The big enchilada. The whole damn show. Yes, I will be setting a date and time for anyone interested in watching me permanently emblazon my flesh with my two greatest inspirations: My daughter and God. Believe it or not a couple of people actually want to see this. So maybe we’ll take some photos just for the Hell of it. Watch me cry live on the Net! Nice. TTYL
