Mopping The Deck

Rig at Prow of Sailing Ship -- That's what she said!

I’ve been pretty busy mopping the deck at digitalflood.com over the last 24 hours (despite my continued and never ending bout with stomach flu) trying to improve some things on the site.

My most recent updates to the site include:

  • Updated WordPress CMS to latest version – Improves security, stability, and overall functionality.
  • Updated all plug-in’s for new WordPress – Again improves security and features.
  • Added Browser Navigation Bar Icon – That little thing next to our web address in your browser is our DF Pirate Radio symbol. If you re-bookmark the site you’ll be able to have a cool icon in your bookmarks. ROCK!
  • Updated Mobile WP – Improves mobile phone load times and reduces initial latency loading site.
  • Updated the digitalflood Pirate Radio Volume 5 Cliff Notes to reflect all that happened behind the scenes this year.

This adds up to putting us at digitalflood.com Version: 11.3.2 (Final) as reflected on our DF Code Tracking page.

Things have been humming along since my last updates and I’m not noticing anymore issues with the site going down. I found not only a spam attack, but a strange web attack as well linked to some configurations on our web server. Overall things have been better so there is no plans on upgrading the server anytime soon, but eventually we will have to go there– this is the price of fame I suppose.

5 Degrees With A Chance Of Flurries

The Stoat-- DJ A.D.D. and I spent twenty minutes talking about it. No joke.

The Stoat-- DJ A.D.D. and I spent twenty minutes talking about it. No joke. It's like a small weasel on steroids drunk on its own power.

It right now is a balmy five degrees outside with 30 MPH winds and snowing fairly heavy. It’s been this way for about four days straight and it doesn’t seem like there’s any chance of it letting up any time soon. It’s this time of year where I basically don’t leave my house. I’m an admitted post-holiday shut in. My phantom illness didn’t help to motivate me to go anywhere over the last 48 hours. I’ve been better though since that night in the ER. I woke up yesterday sore, tired, and a little weak. Overall though I was no where as bad as the other night. Today I’m feeling absolutely fine (normal even), but I’m not pushing it too much.

Nevertheless, life goes on. I had DJ A.D.D. over last night. We basically spent 45 minutes recording “digitalflood Pirate Radio Volume 6 Episode 1” and another six hours messing around on the Internet, watching TV, going out to eat, and talking about the most random stuff you’d ever imagine (fifteenth minutes spent discussing the cost models and content delivery right to use licensing associated with variations in video subscriber models– I won’t even try to explain that in English, but it’s pretty nerdy stuff). We looked at God knows how many electronic musical instruments on the web and even watched the “Watchmen” DVD to cap the evening on a high note. Having said that, the episode came out very good. I’m going to work on post-production over the course of today and it should be out by tomorrow night (1/4/10) barring any unforeseen issues.

I was asked a whole bunch of times what my New Year’s Resolution for this year is and I’m going to divert to my story I put about this on Facebook so you can get a feeling of where I’m coming from this year:

I was randomly asked what my New Years Resolution was because that’s the kind of thing that happens this time of year. I responded without hesitation “To not smoke rock” and they replied “But you don’t smoke rock”. I then replied “Well then 2010 is success story for me already, now isn’t it?

As I pointed out to DJ A.D.D. just before recording this week’s Pirate Radio; any year where you start it in an ER is great year because it can only go uphill from there. And that my friends is how I predict 2010 to be. A year of onward and upward success.

Back to the Future in The Past

Christmas tree at Rockefeller Plaza, New York, 2006

Christmas tree at Rockefeller Plaza, New York, 2006.

Yesterday evening into early this morning MC Mary @ The Disco! and I recorded digitalflood Pirate Radio Volume 5 Episode 6 (The Christmas Episode). Production will start on Sunday night and I expect to have it out for this Monday (12/28) evening. The show is pretty much out of control and I think you’ll find it as amusing to listen to as we did while recording it. The music selection is top notch and in the vein of the Holiday Spirit. I think you’ll enjoy the final product. It looks like this show will be the last episode of the year.

I do have good news though– Volume 6 Episode 1 is already in the planning stages for a 1/4/10 release. This will be our annual Top Ten Worst Songs of the Year show. And if that wasn’t enough– Volume 6 Episode 2, which will come out on 1/12/10 and will feature none other than DJ A.D.D. who has promised to bring with him some of the rarest tunes he can dig up. So 2010 is shaping up to be another stellar year of Pirate Radio already.

I had a wonderful time with my family today. We did our annual Christmas Dinner. A good time was had by all.

Tomorrow evening of course is “digitalflood Party 2009: Holiday Shenanigans”. You can check out the invite here. We hope to see you there.

I’ll get right into it– digitalflood Pirate Radio Volume 5 Episode 4 has been done for over 48 hours. I’m listening to it for like the fourth time and it continues to just absolutely grow on me. You will get a chance to hear it come this evening just a bit after midnight. Yes, 12/19/09 is go day for this our latest chapter in Pirate Radio perfection. I plan on working this evening on Volume 5 Episode 5 and the planned release day is 12/21/09 for that show.

This evening I did some web engine upgrades that are making the site perkier than ever. This included updating to the latest WordPress (2.9) and getting the plug in’s up to date as well. This puts digitalflood.com at code version 11.2.0 (Final). I’ve already begun contemplating what I’m going to do for df.com version 12 (ETA first part of 2010). I plan on keeping with WordPress as I absolutely love it. I will most likely move to an upgraded Linux CentOS server though because web traffic just keeps growing faster and faster. I’ve been reviewing several site lay out options in rough format so far, but no serious development work is going yet. I’m still pretty early in the “Concept Stage” of this project. Stay tuned for more updates as I move into actual production on version 12 of the site.

A while back I talked about DJ A.D.D. working on his own web project. He’s finally gone public beta with the site. You can check it out at: http://www.soapboxnation.com/. The site is absolutely addicting and a great concept. Basically it’s a public sound off forum where you can rant and rave about anything you want. We all love to argue (and even love it more when we’re right) so there’s no doubt this will catch on. Head on over. Sign up for an account and get raving. You’ll find me on the site as “digitalflood”.

Finally, congratulations to my friend Little Keith on the birth of Little Landon. Best wishes to you and your family!

Baddabing

Just a quick brief update on the status of my crashed PC– I’ve got it rebuilt with a new hard drive. Still have to get my music programs installed again, but that should only take another day. If all goes well, I should be working on finishing “digitalflood Pirate Radio Volume 5 Episode 4” by Monday night (12/14/09). I’ll let you know how that shapes up, but at least things are starting to look up again. As always, thanks for hanging in there!
